What comes to your mind when you think of a rebellious art movement? For me, I think of Impressionism.
An art movement that started around 1860 in Paris, France, out of a radical idea: to change the classical, perfect, subject matter, that art of the time was expected to have, and embrace the real- raw themes of ordinary life, and the world we live in.. and also from a need for artists to be able to show their own work without the need of approval from *The Salon.

The Salon was the official exhibit for the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and the one establishment in charge of selecting and exhibiting artwork. This was one of the only real ways an artist could make a name for himself and therefore, make money.- which must have been very frustrating!
The ideas of the movement started by Manet, who begun to challenge the typical subjects and techniques of paintings of the time, opting for art that showed true life in its real raw form, like with his masterpiece Olympia and le déjeuner sur l'herbe- where he dared to portrayed a prostitute and a servant.

It was this art that caught the attention of young painters like Monet, Renoir, Pissaro, and Cezanne, who met with Manet, at the Café Guerbois, where they would discuss art and painting, leading the beginning of The Impressionist Movement… at this caffe the Anonymous Society of Painters, Sculptors, Printmakers was born! It was this, a group created to become independent from the Salon.
In 1874 Monet, along with 29 other artist held their first art viewing, this was not a success at first! In fact the movement borrowed its name from an insult to one of Monets paintings:
The art critique Louis Leroy called Monet’s art pice Impression, Sunrise unfinished in the, now famouse quote "Impression – I was certain of it. I was just telling myself that, since I was impressed, there had to be some impression in it ... and what freedom, what ease of workmanship! Wallpaper in its embryonic state is more finished than that seascape" so instead of being insulted by this, the artists embraced it and took pride in the name given to their work...Impressionism.

It is evident that this hole art movement started from the need to oppose the establishment- very punk.. and breath new life into the art scene, even their name started as an insult! But also adopted as the prideful banner with which the artists would forever be known as.
